Date and time

Monday, January 30, 2017 · 9am - 12pm CST

Location

Martin Professional Development Center

2400 Fairfax Avenue Nashville, TN 37212

Description

Poverty is a daily reality that many students face on a daily basis, but unless you've experienced poverty - it can be difficult to truly understand.

The poverty simulation workshop is a learning tool to help us gain deeper comprehension of poverty's realities. By "walking a mile" in the shoes of someone who experiences poverty, participants can more fully grasp the daily burdens those in poverty may face. This workshop enables participants to look at poverty from a variety of angles, and ultimately, to recognize and discuss the potential for change within the community and how we serve in Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS).

This workshop is ideal for coordinators, their advisory teams and key volunteers. Others are also welcome. The simulation will be followed by a debriefing session by MNPS trainers; total length of the workshop is 3 hours.

Feedback from last year's workshop:

  • "One of the best professional development trainings I've attended."

  • "... very enlightening."

  • "I had no idea this is what people [in our city] go through."

  • "I wished I would have known [more of] what it was; I would have invited so many others."

  • "...decision makers should experience this."

Martin Professional Development Center is located next to Eakin School.
